Wine stores are licensed by the individual states. Some states only permit a licensee to have one store while other states permit mulitple locatations or chain stores. Some states restrict a store to selling only wine while other states permit liquor. Other states permit wine, liquor and beer.
Some stores sell a wide range of wines in all types and price ranges. Others wine retailers specialize in bargain wines, mid-priced wines or high-end wines. Some wine stores specialize in wines of a particular type or from a particular region such as Italy or Bordeaux or Burgundy or California. Some wine retailers are small mom and pop stores doing a modest sales volume while other wine stores are very large doing millions of dollars in sales a year.
